Parliament’s Intention To Be Imposed On POAL

Media Release
31 March 2004

Parliament’s Intention To Be Imposed On Arrogant Ports Of Auckland By NZ First MP

“The need to end all sale negotiations for Westhaven Marina is now more obvious than ever”, said Dail Jones New Zealand First MP.

He was commenting on the new Auckland legislation, which brings an end to Infrastructure Auckland, and the creation of a new asset holding body.

“The arrogance of Ports of Auckland is shown in its spokeswoman’s statement when she says, “the new body couldn’t tell us what to do”.

“ I will be taking every step possible in the new legislation to remind Ports of Auckland that it has a mandate only to administer assets and has no statutory authority to sell them. Ports of Auckland has not replied to my view that its legislation gives it no power of sale of assets.

I warn the Directors of Ports of Auckland that any sale of assets without a statutory power of sale will make them personally liable for the consequences.

Parliament is paramount and the arrogance of Ports of Auckland will soon be the subject of statutory attention and appropriate statutory amendments to put its role beyond doubt,” concluded Mr Jones.
