Turner: Get Families Commission on to parent law

Turner: Get Families Commission on to parenthood law

The Law Commission's call for wide feedback on proposed parenthood law changes must involve the Families Commission - which is now just four months away, United Future's Judy Turner said today.

"It is absolutely vital that these changes are thought through with the greatest of care and deliberation; all the implications need to be fleshed out and worked through.

"And that is precisely the sort of area where the Families Commission will come into its own," Mrs Turner, United Future's family affairs spokeswoman, said.

There have been too many half-baked and half-thought out changes imposed on New Zealand families over the years, she said.

"This has to change and the Families Commission will bring that about.

"Parenthood law is about as fundamental to the structures, the strengths and vulnerabilities of families at it is possible to get. Let's get it right," Mrs Turner said.
