Councils Must Say No To ‘Double Dip’ Parking Meters

“Before local bodies introduce parking meters which cancel outstanding time when a motorist leaves the car park, they should examine their ethics,” said New Zealand First transport spokesperson, Peter Brown.

“Parking meters extract a fee based totally on space for time. Currently, the motorist has every right to pay to park his car or leave the space vacant. If councils want to cancel surplus time when a car is removed, they are in fact adopting the ‘Ross Armstrong philosophy’ and saying it is ok to double dip.

“Personally I think such an idea is outrageous. I suggest councils will have some difficulty if they accept ‘double dipping’ parking meters of criciticising let alone prosecuting any staff member who ‘double dips’.

“My message to councils throughout New Zealand is simple. Don’t throw your ethics totally out of your reasoning,” said Mr Brown.
