Auditor-General must step in at CPIT

The case for an investigation by the Auditor-General into the potential conflict of interest at Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT) has found new urgency says National Education spokesman Bill English.

On Tuesday Mr English lodged a complaint with the Auditor-General calling for an independent investigation into the potential conflict of interest associated with CPIT's Cool IT course.

"I am pleased to see that the Council of the Polytechnic have also recognised the need for an independent audit.

"It would be most appropriate for this audit to be carried out by the Auditor-General who must take into account the ethical standards expected of public institutions - not just commercial matters.

"I welcome the positive approach of the CPIT council and look forward to a response from the Auditor-General.

"The interests of transparency must be served when such serious questions are posed about financial probity," says Mr English.
