ACT is not prepared to sit idly by and allow Auckland Mayor Hon John Banks get away with firing broadsides at Wellington, ACT New Zealand North Shore-based MP Deborah Coddington said today.
"Mr Banks came to Wellington in June and dismissed the capital as a `port town at the bottom of the country which without politicians and the Parliament, would only be of interest to those catching the Interislander'," Miss Coddington said.
"Sir Robert Jones, a lifetime supporter of Wellington, was swift to respond: `If he can prove that a single migrant or job outside of his bureaucracy can be directly traced to his period as mayor, I will run naked down Queen St'.
"I have invited Sir Robert to Auckland to respond to John Banks' outrageous attacks on Wellingtonians," Miss Coddington said, "And Sir Robert is flying up on Wednesday, 21 July, to do just that.
"At a fundraising dinner at McHugh's Restaurant in Devonport, Sir Robert will take the mickey out of Aucklanders. I expect there will be much reference to white shoes, gold chains, and rude barking into cell phones.
"However, as a committed Aucklander myself, I know we have better senses of humour than Wellingtonians. We can take it on the chin.
"I have also asked Mayor Banks to provide written evidence of a migrant who has settled in Auckland directly because of His Worship.
"Banksie assures me this is definitely manageable, so Aucklanders will have the added bonus of seeing Sir Robert run naked down Queen St.
"I suggest all decent-minded people avert their eyes," Miss Coddington warned.
