Welfare Symposium

Welfare Symposium

Wednesday 11 Aug 2004

Dr Muriel Newman - Press Releases - Social Welfare

ACT New Zealand Deputy Leader and Social Welfare Spokesman Dr Muriel Newman today invited the media to attend, what will be, the most important symposium on welfare reform to be held in New Zealand in 2004.

"The need for welfare reform is an issue that exercises the hearts and minds of all western countries.

"This symposium will bring together some of the best of those hearts and minds - including Hon Michael Bassett, Sir Roger Douglas, Alan Duff, US Professor Lawrence Mead, British MP Frank Field, Australian Professor Peter Saunders, as well as experts who work in the field. An interview with US Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson will also feature.

"There is no doubting that entrenched welfare dependency is one of the biggest problems facing New Zealand as a developed nation today. We have asked the hard questions. It is time to look for answers. I urge everyone to come along and hear the solutions for themselves," Dr Newman said.

Note: Symposium includes morning tea, light lunch and afternoon tea. No charge for media representatives (media accreditation required).
