Most Wing 218 graduates North Island bound

Most of the 59 constables graduating today from the Royal New Zealand Police College are destined to begin their police careers in the North Island, Police Minister George Hawkins says.

Wing 218 comprised 41 men and 18 women, ranging in age from 21 to 41 years, with an average age of 30 years.

Of the recruits 32 are destined for the Auckland region, while 14 will join other North Island districts. Thirteen will work in the South Island.

Mr Hawkins said Auckland Central station will receive one new constable, Avondale nine, Henderson four, Mt Wellington six, Newmarket two, Papakura three, Takapuna seven, Hamilton one, Tokoroa one, Te Awamutu one, Hastings two, Napier two, Wairoa one, New Plymouth one, Wanganui two, Palmerston North three, Timaru one, Christchurch eleven and Dunedin one.

Mr Hawkins said with 7450 sworn officers and 2287 non-sworn staff as of 30 June this year, total police numbers had never been higher.
