Adams: Abortion documentary provides a challenge

United Future's Paul Adams said the abortion documentary screened on TV1 last night raised important issues and would hopefully lead to women being more informed about the reality and consequences of abortion.

The documentary, My Foetus, included footage of an early-term abortion and graphic images of aborted foetuses.

"People are having to face up to the reality that there is increasing scientific evidence that what is happening is the destruction of a human life - and that issue needs to come out into the open. It is time to take the shutters off," Mr Adams said.

He said that for too long abortions - with 18,500 in New Zealand last year - had been carried out without real acknowledgement that it is the taking of a human life.

Mr Adams said most abortions were being performed under the pretext of protecting the mother's mental health, which is a farce in the vast majority of cases.

"We either have a huge mental health issue with our female population, or we in fact have abortion on demand. Let's at least be honest about it," he said.
