Hartley gets Labour nod in Northcote

Deputy Speaker Ann Hartley will stand for Labour in Northcote in the next general election.

The Northcote Labour Electorate Committee (LEC) has confirmed her as its candidate.

Ann Hartley has lived in Birkenhead with her husband, Maurice, for 40 years. She is a former Mayor of Birkenhead City and was the first Mayor of North Shore City, and is credited with preserving much of the area’s bush, beaches and open spaces as reserves and founding the area’s network of community houses.

Ann Hartley first won the Northcote seat in 1999 with a majority of 278. In 2002 she increased her majority to 2624, taking 12,455 votes.

In 2002, Ann Hartley became the first woman to be appointed Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

She is currently campaigning for Auckland Harbour Bridge to be modified so that people can walk and bike over it, and is recognised as a hard-working electorate MP who has successfully lobbied for extra resources for community facilities like schools and early childhood centres.

“At the moment I’m particularly pleased that my lobbying for a new North Shore police headquarters has paid off, with the announcement of a new multi-million-dollar station at Albany,” she said.
