Alexander: Give jail-breakers a real shock
United Future MP Marc Alexander has called today for a review of prison security measures.
"It is an absurdity that one of New Zealand's most notorious prison escapee can waltz out of prison for the sixth time - and not even be noticed until he shows up for medical attention at a hospital," he said..
"Our prisons are not supposed to be holiday camps where the happy campers can walk in and out at will. What next? A trot down to the nearest pub for a beer or a bet at the local TAB before sneaking back in unnoticed?
"And I suppose not only will our inmate cop a few extra months for his 'extracurricular' wanderings but the tax-payer will be slugged for his medical bills run up as a result! No waiting list for him of course!
"It's about time we brought these convicts to account for all their bad choices. Firstly we could start by making them pay, or if they can't at least attach a debt to the costs of their attemted and successful escape attempts should cost be incurred.
"Secondly let's revisit the idea of electric fences around prisons that will jolt some much needed sense into them if they try to make a bid for freedom.
"And finally lets make our state managed prisons as accountable for escapees as we have held our privately managed Auckland Remand Prison who if it happens under their watch receive a $50,000 penalty" says Mr Alexander.
