MP wants Mayor to go further
News that new Auckland Mayor Dick Hubbard will champion an Auckland harbour tunnel is being welcomed by Northcote MP Ann Hartley – but she wants him to go further.
“A tunnel is the obvious solution to Auckland’s harbour-crossing problems, and I will be delighted to work with Mr Hubbard on this – but where does he stand on providing access for walkers and cyclists on the Auckland Harbour Bridge?” she said.
Mrs Hartley, a former North Shore City Mayor, has been campaigning for people to be able to walk and cycle over the bridge.
In August, Parliament’s Transport and Industrial Relations Select Committee backed the idea, and Transit New Zealand is now investigating its feasibility.
Mrs Hartley said that civic leaders on both sides of the harbour should support the bridge bike ‘hike campaign. North Shore Mayor George Wood and his council have already pledged their support.
