Liquor Licensing Authority decision 'nuts'!

Friday 11, January 2005

Alexander: Liquor Licensing Authority decision 'nuts'!

"The Liquor Licensing Authority should be ashamed of itself for making it more difficult for Suppermarkets to be responsible alcohol suppliers," said United Future spokesman Marc Alexander.

The authority ruled that it was 'unreasonable, unlawful and stopped people between 18 and 25 legitimately buying alcohol' because of a condition requiring Auckland City alcohol suppliers to ensure all under-25s produce identification.

"The authority's decion is absurd because all these outlets are trying to enforce the law by giving themselves a sensible margin of error to check the age of the purchaser. But with this judgement, they might well be punished for doing so!"

"With a huge underage drinking problem all these Supermarkets are trying to be is responsible and the very authority which should be helping them will now be seen as undermining them!"

"With fines up to $10,000 for breaches, alcohol suppliers need to be vigilant. Besides, being told to prove your age before purchase in no way infringes on your legitimate right top purchse. And proving it is hardly onerous, no more so that having a current driver's license while you're behind the wheel."
