Fire Service Fleet Strategy Risky
New Zealand First internal affairs spokesperson Brent Catchpole says possible cuts to fire trucks at some stations could jeopardise the provision of quality fire services for New Zealanders.
Mr Catchpole’s comments follow reports that the Fire Service would be subjected to a new five-year “fleet strategy” which could mean some stations have fire trucks taken away and placed at other stations in order to match appliances to risks in communities.
“Any reduction in fleet numbers would be of concern. It could reduce response times and potentially put lives and property at risk.
“Before the process is begun, a comprehensive risk analysis needs to be undertaken and the report put out for meaningful public consultation.
“New Zealand has a fine Fire Service and any cuts in vehicle numbers could place this in jeopardy," concluded Mr Catchpole.
