And Now For The Hard Part - Delivery
23 May 2002
It will require a culture change by Government agencies and officials across the board to deliver the business support programmes highlighted in the Budget as needed to lift the sustainable growth rate.
“The Government’s intention to build sustainable growth from a bigger tier of exporters and new investment brings business to the centre of Government’s activities”, said Michael Barnett, Chief Executive of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce.
“It will take time and effort for those programmes to kick in. Are there the right attitudes among officials? Can business be encouraged to participate in the development of these activities?”
“Based on overseas partnerships between government, business and skilled workers, NZ will need to see a series of initiatives to build new relationships between these groups”, said Mr Barnett.
If business is to be a constituent of Government to deliver growth, Government will need to be prepared to make the effort and do some hard listening.
“Some have shown they can, but the whole team will now need to work together with business to deliver this Budget’s promises.”
