CTU supports Labour led Government
01 July 2002
“The Council of Trade Unions has no hesitation in recommending to union members to support the election of a Labour led Government on the 27th July,” said CTU president Ross Wilson today.
“As the largest democratic organisation in New Zealand with almost 300,000 affiliated union members, the CTU is a coalition of diverse interests, but I have never seen such broad support for a Government,” Ross Wilson said.
“The introduction today of paid parental leave is a timely reminder of what is being achieved and what has yet to be done.”
Ross Wilson said union leaders on the CTU National Council had sounded out union members and formally endorsed the continuation of a Government led by Helen Clark.
“While there are some issues for some state sector workers with the Government as employer I don’t think any union member wants to return to the 1990’s policies which National and ACT are promising,” he said.
“The CTU will continue to provide union members with detailed analysis of party policies over the next few weeks to help them make and informed vote”.
