Renewable Energy Welcomed - But not Fast Enough!

New Zealand Photovoltaic Association

"The solar electricity industry welcomes the Government's commitment to ratification of the Kyoto Protocol and its support for more renewable energy" said Dr Tony Bittar, chairman of the New Zealand Photovoltaic Association.

Climate change poses a very serious threat to the New Zealand economy, so it is disappointing that Government is not demonstrating a greater sense of urgency about this problem, Dr Bittar said.

Delays in establishing a carbon charge until 2007 and the lack of early action to initiate new renewable energy projects will mean that excellent opportunities are lost. The building of any new gas or coal fired power station now would negate all the government actions and once again set New Zealand down an unsustainable path.

We can do better - and we need to start now!
