New EEO Commissioner Welcomed

Chief Human Rights Commissioner Rosslyn Noonan welcomed today’s appointment of the first Equal Employment Opportunities Commissioner.

“On behalf of the Commission, I want to convey both congratulations and greetings to the new EEO Commissioner, Professor Judith McGregor.”

“Professor McGregor brings a wealth of experience to the newly created position of EEO Commissioner which will enable the Commission to focus on EEO issues in an even more extensive and effective way,” said Ms Noonan.

“Her experience in private sector and academic management positions will provide the Commission’s work in this area with added credibility and relevance”.

Professor McGregor will work as part of the Human Rights Commission and take responsibility for providing advice and leadership on matters relating to EEO, including leading the development of guidelines and voluntary codes of practice to promote best practice in EEO.

Professor McGregor’s appointment is for five years. She will take up her warrant in January 2003.

Professor McGregor is currently Head of the Department of Communications and Journalism, and was formerly Head of the Human Resources Management Department, at Massey University, Wellington. For the past four years, she has also led Massey University’s research team on issues surrounding the employment of the older worker.

Before her employment at Massey, Professor McGregor worked as a journalist for the Waikato Times and The Dominion and was the editor of the Sunday News and the Auckland Star.
