Canterbury Students to Rally Against War

An anti-war rally is being organised for Friday 21 March at the University of Canterbury.

The rally will allow students to take a stand to oppose the first day of the invasion of Iraq. It is also to rally direct action against New Zealand’s naval involvement in the Gulf, and the government’s continued support for deathly sanctions against Iraq.

The rally is taking place at 12 noon on the steps of the Central Library on campus.

Speakers will include: Mustafa Alzaidi (an Iraqi-born member of the Middle East Collective), David Small (a lecturer from the Education Department), Sam Kingi (from the Anti-Capitalist Alliance), Ola Kamel (from the Christchurch Mosque), and many others.

A spokesperson for the Anti-Capitalist Alliance, Sam Kingi, said “We are hoping for a big turn-out. The students we have spoken to at Canterbury appear to be very angry about what is happening. They are not at all apathetic, as some in the media have made out. Students want to do something to show they oppose this unjust war.”

Organisers hope that this will be the biggest anti-war rally on campus since the Vietnam War.

The rally is being organised by the Anti-Capitalist Alliance in conjunction with the Middle East Collective and “revolution” magazine.
