~ THURS, 26 June - 'Together against Torture', a seminar to discuss: what international law is in place protecting people from torture and how effective has the 1987 UN Convention against Torture been? How does New Zealand fare in the international scene? Is it supporting regimes and governments that covertly or overtly torture their citizens? How has the 'war against terrorism' impacted on people’s rights and freedoms? Refugees, who have experienced torture, will tell their stories and a representative from Amnesty International will discuss the role of their organisation in the global fight against torture, one of the least reported, yet most serious, human rights violations. The seminar convener is Heval Hylan, a refugee from Iraq who is qualified as a lawyer both in Baghdad and in New Zealand, and who works closely with the refugee community and liaises regularly with the government. ~ FRI, 20 June and SAT, 21 June - Maramatanga o te Tiriti o Waitangi / Understanding the Treaty of Waitangi. The workshop is designed for those wishing to start the bicultural journey; it provides an opportunity for people to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi and its relevance to our society, and is designed for people who wish to live a Treaty-based life at home at work and in their everyday life. Participants have the opportunity to reach an understanding of the nature of culture and an awareness of cultural identity, become aware of the pre-treaty history of Aotearoa/New Zealand, study both the Mäori and English versions of te Tiriti o Waitangi and discuss the intentions of the Treaty, and become familiar with Treaty related events from 1840 to the present day. Facilitators are Roni Fitzmaurice, Barbara Cowan and Helen Simmonds (Network Waitangi, Manawatu); Mäori Caucus Leaders are Makareta Tawaroa and Kiritahi Takiari. Participants will be provided with folder and copies of documents used in the workshop. Cost is $60 plus GST residential (breakfast and lunch provided), or $50 plus GST non residential (bring your own lunch); tea and coffee provided. ~ WEDS, 16 July - 'What’s really going on in a conflict?' An interactive seminar led by John and Diana Lampen, English Quakers with international experience of working in conflict situations. John and Diana provide consultancy and training in peace building skills and creative handling of conflict; they have worked with young people and adults in England, Northern Ireland, Belarus, Bosnia, Ukraine and Uganda. Further details of their Hope Project are at http://www.hopeproject.co.uk The Conference of Churches in Aotearoa New Zealand (CCANZ) has organised this seminar as part of the member churches’ commitment to the Decade to overcome Violence (DoV). The seminar is aimed at people from different churches who are willing to apply the learning from this DoV theme in their own church/parish situations. John and Diana promise that “there will be plenty of space to hear each other’s views, reconsider one’s own and talk together on issues which Christians and others find difficult.” From 5pm to 9pm, Quaker Meeting House, 72 Cresswell Ave, Burwood.
