~ SAT, 13 September - Worldwide Day of Action Against Corporate Globalisation and War: "From September 10 to 14, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will hold its Fifth Ministerial meeting in Cancun, Mexico. Pushed by multinational corporations, the United States, the European Union, and other developed countries are seeking to launch a new round of 'free trade' negotiations and expand corporate globalisation - further eroding human rights, workers' rights, environmental protections, and democracy - in the interest of corporate control. Popular movements in Mexico and their international allies will mark these meetings with massive demonstrations to demand a world that puts democracy and human dignity ahead of corporate profits. Solidarity actions around the world will focus on September 13 as a Worldwide Day of Action Against Corporate Globalisation and War." Another world is possible - "We have before us a choice: the world of militarism and corporate globalisation, or a world built on global solidarity, rooted in a foundation of democracy, dignity, sustainability, and cooperation." ~ SUN, 10 to THURS, 21 August - 'Focus on West Papua - Oppression and resistance: A critical issue for the Pacific' - national speaking tour by John Rumbiak, West Papuan Human Rights Advocate, of the West Papua Institute for Human Rights Study and Advocacy (ELS-HAM); ELSHAM has been at the forefront of efforts to establish Papua as a Zone of Peace, an initiative involving Papua's governor, key officials, church and other civil society leaders - it is internationally respected for its human rights monitoring work but has been under strong pressure from the Indonesian military, its people, including John, have received death threats and been subject to violence, intimidation and harassment. John is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University's Center for Human Rights Study, where he is also a Director of the Papua Resource Center. The show will feature musicians Burmese dancers and readings. Proceeds from 'A Night for Aung San Suu Kyi' will be used to fund a postcard campaign sending support back to Burma; 3pm to 6pm at the Aro Valley Community Centre. ~ Ongoing to 15 August - art exhibitions and series of public programmes including: * 'Bombs Away ' - while the war on 'terror' is played out on the international stage, 'Bombs Away' explores the meaning and impact of nuclear power through commissioned works by six leading New Zealand artists (Fiona Jack, Jo Randerson, Tony de Lautour, Richard Reddaway and Megan Adams with Paul Redican). Responding to government, pro-nuclear films of atomic testing from the five original nuclear nations, the artists in 'Bombs Away' examine New Zealand's position in a global context * 'Remembering Toba Tek Singh', a significant new-media installation created by internationally acclaimed Indian artist Nalini Malani. Shown as part of the Asia-Pacific Triennial in 2002 at the Queensland Art Gallery, the work deals with the ongoing implications of the 1947 separation of India and Pakistan, and is a reaction, specifically, to nuclear testing in both countries. * 'Kainga Tahi Kainga Rua' which brings together, in collaboration, the artistic direction and work of Brett Graham and the research of Dr. Katerina Teaiwa. A major audio-visual installation, the exhibition centres on Banaba, a small island in the Republic of Kiribati, and explores the issue of phosphate mining undertaken by the Australian and New Zealand governments from 1900 to 1979. 'Kainga Tahi Kainga Rua' reveals the history of Banaba and its people and raises questions about the role New Zealand played in the fate of the island and the country's place in the Pacific.
