~ THURS, 11 Sept - 'Circles of Hope: A Healing Memorial to 9/11', Peaceful Tomorrows (the US group comprising families whose relatives were killed in the 11 Sept attacks on New York and Washington) this year invite you to commemorate the anniversary with Circles of Hope. "We plan to encircle the World Trade Center site with a candlelight vigil on the night of September 10, 2003. Gather with us in New York City or create a Circle of Hope candlelight vigil in your own community." ~ SAT, 13 September - Worldwide Day of Action Against Corporate Globalisation and War: "From September 10 to 14, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will hold its Fifth Ministerial meeting in Cancun, Mexico. Pushed by multinational corporations, the United States, the European Union, and other developed countries are seeking to launch a new round of 'free trade' negotiations and expand corporate globalisation - further eroding human rights, workers' rights, environmental protections, and democracy - in the interest of corporate control. Popular movements in Mexico and their international allies will mark these meetings with massive demonstrations to demand a world that puts democracy and human dignity ahead of corporate profits. Solidarity actions around the world will focus on September 13 as a Worldwide Day of Action Against Corporate Globalisation and War." Another world is possible - "We have before us a choice: the world of militarism and corporate globalisation, or a world built on global solidarity, rooted in a foundation of democracy, dignity, sustainability, and cooperation." ~ Ongoing to THURS, 21 August - Focus on West Papua - 'Oppression and resistance: A critical issue for the Pacific - what are the hopes for dialogue?', national speaking tour by John Rumbiak, West Papuan Human Rights Advocate, of the West Papua Institute for Human Rights Study and Advocacy (ELSHAM); ELSHAM has been at the forefront of efforts to establish Papua as a Zone of Peace, an initiative involving Papua's governor, key officials, church and other civil society leaders - it is internationally respected for its human rights monitoring work but has been under strong pressure from the Indonesian military, its people, including John, have received death threats and been subject to violence, intimidation and harassment. John is currently a visiting scholar at Columbia University's Center for Human Rights Study, where he is also a Director of the Papua Resource Center. ~ THURS, 14 August - rally in support of Algerian asylum seeker Ahmed Zaoui who has been granted refugee status by the Refugee Status Appeal Authority, but is still being detained in Paremoremo on the basis of a security risk certificate issued by the SIS. Meet at 12-30pm at the Immigration Service National Office (52 The Terrace), at 12-45pm we will walk together to parliament. While the Immigration Service as such have no influence into Mr Zaoui's situation, our meeting place and walk will be symbolic of how the issue has moved from being an immigration issue as such, to becoming a political issue. At parliament we will be directly calling on the Government to release Mr Zaoui - and to accept the findings of the Refugee Status Appeals Authority.
