Anarchist Infoshop opening in Dunedin - NZ

Anarchist Infoshop opening in Dunedin - New Zealand

After several years (at least!) of people wanting an infoshop/anarchist resource centre in Dunedin, a group of us are setting up an infoshop and media space called Black Star Books.

At Black Star Books is an infoshop you will find many worlds of information: on diverse social, political issues & radical ideas, about upcoming events & local flaxroots groups. Working in collaboration with Dunedin Indymedia, we also provide a public media-making space with internet access.

At Black Star Books we stock magazines, journals, books, pamphlets, stickers, t-shirts & patches relating to a diversity of subjects, including: anarchism, animal liberation, community and workplace organising, art, (queer) sexualities, indigenous struggles, feminisms and radical ecologies. We also have copylefted literature and Linux software available on CD.

We stock things that are extremely difficult to get anywhere in the South Island : Te Wai Pounamu and we sell it at non-profit prices :).

Black Star Books is organised collectively by volunteers. In establishing it, we seek to create a space for mutual learning, critical reflection & discussion, somewhere that supports direct action and interventions to empower ourselves & others, to strengthen the communities we live in. We stand together in opposition to authoritarianism & we reject both capitalism and the state because we believe in autonomy, flaxroots organisation, tino rangatiratanga, ecological sustainability, and creativity. We reject all forms of domination and discrimination, whether they be class exploitation, patriarchal privilege, racism, incarceration of refugees, homophobia, animal exploitation, or religious dogma. Instead, we work through decentralisation and use a horizontal consensus-based decision making process.

The infoshop will be situated at 24 Stafford St, sharing space with the artist-run gallery space 'none', for a healthy dose of art with your subversion (what could be better?)

Can you help us?

* We need money for network cable, networking cards, and bandwidth costs. In fact donations of any kind of functioning technology would greatly help.Have you got a computer/printer that needs a good home? * Are you a zine maker, writer, screen-printer or documentary maker? We want more zines, videos, t-shirts and patches. Actually , we want more of everything! * We also need money to cover printing costs of booklets * And a clothes rack to display t-shirts etc. * If your grassroots/community group has free information, zines, leaflets, pamphlets etc, please send it to us! Because we would love to distribute it.

Contact us if you can help, or if you simply want to know more about the project. We welcome involvement from anybody who agrees with the aims and principles we have outlined and is committed to making the world a better place.

Opening Party

There will be a Opening Party for Black Star Books on Friday 14th of November, at Arc Café 135 High St, with performances from Ritalin, Blistering Tongues, The Remains, the Futurians, the Aesthetics and more to be confirmed. All proceeds will be gratefully directed to running BSB: purchasing books and materials and covering rent, power etc..

Hope to see you there!
