Report exonerates public servant

The State Services Commission’s report released today into the events surrounding the so-called “guinea pig” letter has cleared the parliamentary electorate secretary involved in the incident of any wrongdoing but will not compensate for the unnecessary and inappropriate stress she suffered, PSA national secretary Richard Wagstaff said.

The electorate secretary’s name was widely publicised and she was harshly targeted by politicians and the media for what, it now turns out, was simply performing the duties required by her job as a public servant.”

“She was harassed by reporters, was the subject of talkback radio discussion, her integrity was publicly questioned and undermined, and her privacy at home was compromised – all because she carried out her job.”

Richard Wagstaff said the episode reinforced the importance of public servants, who are unable to defend themselves against unwarranted and unfounded criticism, being able to carry out their duties without fear.

“It is imperative that politicians and the media distinguish between those making decisions and who are accountable, and those – our members – who are carrying out their work in good faith.”
