UPDATE: New Zealand troops in basrah after EXPLOSIONS

Basrah City remains closed to Coalition Forces except those directed to support Iraqi casualties. NZ Troops are safe and remain in Fortress Lines and will stay there today.

Defence spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Andrew Lincoln says, all NZ Troops are reported safe and well and remain in Base (Fortress Lines). It is likely that they will remain there tomorrow to allow Iraqis time and space to grieve.

The NZ Base is a former Iraqi Naval Academy shared with British Engineers.

It is will protected and NZ and British Forces provides security. NZ engineers will return to work once security situation allows.

NZ engineers are currently working on the refurbishment of schools and bridges and the installation of water facilities to the civilian population in the region.
