"Defend the Legacy committed to marching in March"

Management of Defend the Legacy are pushing forward with their plans to march over the Auckland Harbour Bridge on Saturday 5th March 2005. The event was launched following the passing of last years same sex marriage law (Civil Union Bill) and represents a significant stand for family values, the institution of marriage and the well being of children.

In response to today's press statement by Police, Pastor Andrew Stock of the Defend The Legacy management said that three months prior notice was given to civic authorities to help facilitate this event. The date of Sat 5th March was selected on consultation with Auckland City Council so as to provide minimal inconvenience to the public and city infrastructure.

"We have done everything within our power to do things right by the authorities. The issues we are marching for are close to the heart of many New Zealanders who uphold traditional family values and respect the institution of marriage. We did not launch this event lightly and have no intention of canceling it", said Pastor Stock.

The event continues to gather momentum and recently gained the support of twenty South Auckland Pacific Island Churches. Churches from around the country are also making plans to attend.

"The recent Hikoi was facilitated by authorities at short notice and without the level of consultation we have undertaken. We feel equally as passionate about the issues of family and marriage and have every right to gather and march in a peaceful and respectful manner" Pastor Stock added.
