Support Grows for Government to Withdraw from WTO case

GE Free NZ (in food and environment) is adding its support to calls from throughout New Zealand demanding the Government withdraw from the WTO complaint aimed at forcing GM on the worlds consumers.

The decision to support the US's complaint sets the government on collision course with the wider community here and overseas.

" The government is guilty of gross cultural insensitivity in ignoring the wishes of everyone except their biotech industry supporters. They are also wrong to believe their action is based on sound science. Quite the contrary: their ' rules-based' approach is a scientific charade," says Jon Carapiet from GE-Free NZ in food and environment.

The Labour Party's own Northern Region Province has already passed two remits to be voted on at the Labour Party AGM later this year which both run counter to the government's pro-GM policy on trade and their sacrificing of GE-free production.

" They have opened a can of worms that goes far beyond these borders, and the government would be prudent to respect cultural values here and overseas by withdrawing from the WTO case," says Mr Carapiet.
