1) Australia -Timor: The politics of betrayal 13/09/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) SYDNEY - The record of Whitlam's second meeting with Soeharto in Townsville in April that year shows Whitlam barely giving self-determination a mention and bagging his domestic critics on the Timor issue. Crucially, he told Soeharto that Australia's Timor policy would be guided by the principle that relations with Indonesia were paramount.

2) Secret papers confirm East Timor cover-up 13/09/00 (Sydney Morning Herald) CANBERRA - Australian diplomatic cables released yesterday covering Indonesia's takeover of East Timor in 1974-76 show officials caught in a web of deceit and moral compromise that led to a foreign policy disaster.

3) Former Australian Prime Minister rejected warnings 13/09/00 (The Age) CANBERRA - The Whitlam government ignored warnings by its own officials of an Indonesian strategy to make Australia complicit in the invasion of East Timor in 1975, classified documents have revealed.

Wolfensohn sent a letter last week to Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid warning that continued financial support for the southeast Asian archipelago may be linked to the success of its efforts to quell militia groups in western Timor.
