Russia Raises Terrorism and Nukes With Iran
Deputy Foreign Minister and Russian Political Director at the G-8 Georgy Mamedov Meets Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Gholamreza Shafei
Deputy Foreign Minister and Political Director of the Russian Federation at the G-8, Georgy Mamedov, received the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) to Moscow, Gholamreza Shafei.
Special attention was paid to the topical problem of nonproliferation of mass destruction weapons and the fight against international terrorism. Gholamreza Shafei assured the Russian side of the firm adherence of Iran to its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, and briefed it on the intensive development of inspection cooperation between the IRI and the IAEA. And he categorically rejected the accusations presented by Washington to Teheran regarding links with international terrorist organizations.
Georgy Mamedov expressed concern over the existence of serious unclarified issues in connection with nuclear research in Iran and pointed to the need for an exhaustive discussion of that problem by the IAEA Board of Governors in June and an early signing by Iran of an additional protocol to the agreement on IAEA safeguards. The hope was also expressed for phased normalization of the Iranian-American relations which would contribute to the lessening of tensions in the entire Middle East region, especially in the conditions that have taken shape there after the war in Iraq.
The agreement was confirmed, in principle, on an early holding of Russian-Iranian consultations in Teheran on the issues of disarmament, nonproliferation and export control.
The parties touched upon some other issues of bilateral relations, international and regional policy, in particular, on the eve of the discussion of the relations between G-8 and Iran at the Evian summit on June 1-3.
