Roh Praises Beijing's Role in Nuke Issue
President Roh Moo-hyun on Wednesday (Sept. 3) called on China to continue its efforts toward resolving the standoff over North Korea¡¯s nuclear programs.
In a meeting with Wu Bangguo, the visiting chairman of China¡¯s National People¡¯s Congress standing committee, Roh stressed the need to maintain the momentum of dialogue following the six-way talks on the North¡¯s bid to develop nuclear weapons.
¡°President Roh highly appreciated China¡¯s efforts to find a peaceful solution to the nuclear problem, including its mediation to realize the six-country dialogue," presidential spokesman Yoon Tai-young said.
Yoon quoted Roh as having expressed confidence that Wu¡¯s visit will help enhance ties between South Korea and China into ¡°comprehensive cooperative partner relations¡± as agreed by Roh and Chinese President Hu Jintao in their July summit meeting.
Wu vowed Beijing will continue to closely cooperate with Seoul to ensure regional peace and stability, and denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.
Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is
visiting here along with Wu, also underlined that the
six-way talks should be continued while urging Seoul to play
a more constructive role in settling the standoff.
