Security Council welcomes Burundi agreement
United Nations Security Council members today welcomed the signing of a power-sharing agreement designed to end a 10-year civil war in Burundi and urged the two signatories to negotiate an accord on the outstanding issues without delay.
The agreement, called the Pretoria Protocol, between the Transitional Government of Burundi and the Conseil National pour la Défense de la Démocratie/Force pour la Défense de la Démocratie (CNDD-FDD), covers joint action on political, defence and security issues and was signed yesterday.
Council members thanked South African President Thabo
Mbeki, his deputy, Jacob Zuma, and other regional leaders
for their mediation and called on the Forces Nationales de
Libération (FNL) to join the negotiations, the President of
the Council, Ambassador John D. Negroponte of the United
States, said in a press
statement.
