Qorei Says He Is ready To Meet Sharon Next Week

Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qorei said he was ready to meet Israeli premier Ariel Sharon next week if conditions are right. Qorei said Palestinian opposition to "Israel's" separation wall would have been less strident if it had been built right on the so-called Green Line rather than encroaching on West Bank territory.

Qorei said cabinet chiefs of the two leaders would meet to prepare the meeting. Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the government has allocated a hundred and sixty million dollars to extend its internationally condemned West Bank wall.

The United Nations General Assembly has demanded "Israel stop and reverse" construction of the barrier, which annexes more Palestinian land and represents an obstacle to the establishment of a future Palestinian state.

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer met Palestinian prime minister Ahmed Qorei in his Abu Dis office before holding talks with Israeli premier Ariel Sharon.

Fischer urged the pair to relaunch negotiations. He received an update on the latest efforts to revive the so-called "roadmap" peace plan. Qorei praised Germany for its "very constructive role" in the process.

Fischer did not meet with Palestinian Chairman Yasser Arafat who has been boycotted by the US and "Israel". During talks with Sharon, Fischer expressed his concern that the West Bank wall "Israel" is building "will create facts on the ground."

The Israeli daily Maariv reported Tuesday that Sharon is planning to unveil a unilateral plan for army redeployment and the dismantling of several Jewish settlements in the occupied territories, while moving some outposts to settlement blocs in the West Bank. Washington welcomed the move, but US State Department spokesman Richard Boucher stressed that this would not be a substitute for a negotiated deal.

The Palestinians oppose non- negotiated decisions that might affect their future state and fear any redeployment would be considered definitive by "Israel", whether or not, it matches internationally recognized borders.

For his part, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher was expected in occupied Jerusalem next Monday in the highest-ranking visit to "Israel" by an Egyptian official since the start of the intifada since September 2000.Public radio said he would meet his Israeli counterpart Silvan Shalom, who held talks last week with Hosni Mubarak in Geneva in the first meeting between an Israeli official and the Egyptian president since "Israel's" current government was formed.
