UN Panel Awards $203 Million In Damages Arising From
Iraq's Invasion Of Kuwait
The United Nations panel set up to award damages arising from Iraq's 1990 invasion and subsequent occupation of Kuwait today approved awards of $203.8 million to various claimants.
The Geneva-based Governing Council of the UN Compensation Commission approved hundreds of claims, including 390 filed on behalf of individuals by the Palestinian Authority. The total award of that disbursement was valued at $7,822,582.
In addition, the Council discussed reports on the processing of claims and the payment of approved awards; the distribution of payments to successful claimants; the transparency of the distribution process; and the return of undistributed funds.
To date, the Commission has awarded compensation of
approximately $48.2 billion. The Governing Council is slated
to open its next session in late June.
