World Vision readies airlift for Darfur victims

Sudan: World Vision readies airlift for Darfur victims

World Vision will airlift in emergency supplies this weekend to assist thousands of refugees fleeing violence in western Sudan.

The supplies will likely include water containers, blankets, soap, mosquito nets, soap and cooking pots.

World Vision relief staff are anxious to get supplies to the region before the rainy season commences and roads become impassable.

The UNHCR estimates 180,000 refugees have entered Chad following war in Sudan's Darfur province.

Most refugees are struggling to keep their remaining livestock alive because of a lack of water and pasture in overcrowded refugee camps.

Arab militias are accused of burning down villages, killing men, raping women and girls, stealing livestock and poisoning water points.

About 1 million people have been displaced by the conflict.

Yesterday the BBC reported that hundreds of children were already starving in Darfur and hundreds of thousands more would die of hunger if aid did not reach the region.
