Kiwi Salvationists lead Peace March in Jerusalem
Three New Zealand Salvationists along with 25 other Kiwis will lead a 14,000 strong Inter-faith Peace March through Jerusalem this Saturday. The New Zealand contingent is part of a delegation of faith communities from over 100 countries around the world.
The march is an international demonstration of commitment to peace from people representing all the major world religions.
Director of Community and Family Services for Manukau City Gerry Walker is the leader of The Salvation Army delegation. Walker said the march was part of a two-week international peace conference where people representing vastly different cultures and religions had come together as a demonstration that peace and harmony were possible despite difference.
"Since we have arrived in Jerusalem there has been a bombing that killed two people and the situation is extremely tense but it seems to be of great encouragement to the local people that people of various faiths are willing to demonstrate a commitment to peace in the Middle East."
