Aerobics comes to Allan Brewster Recreation Centre

Les Mills aerobics comes to Allan Brewster Recreation Centre

Some of the world's best fitness classes are coming to Papatoetoe. Manukau City Council is introducing Les Mills aerobics to the Allan Brewster Recreation Centre from 1 July (next Tuesday).

Les Mills aerobics is internationally recognised as one of the world's hottest fitness products, and is choreographed by leading fitness experts. The classes answer the demand for excitement and fun in physical exercise, while providing structured workouts with specific training benefits.

"This is an exciting step for Manukau City, and particularly for the Papatoetoe community and the Allan Brewster Recreation Centre," says Leisure Services marketing co-ordinator Philip Dobson. "We have selected five Les Mills classes that we believe will appeal to our local community and provide people with a fun and exciting way to engage in exercise.

"Each class has a very defined style that will attract people who like to exercise in different ways. For example, the BODYJAM class is a very dance-oriented workout. It's described as 'the ultimate dance party workout' and is a really fun and energetic class that allows people to be expressive."

Mr Dobson says introducing Les Mills aerobics is one step towards improving the perceived value of council operated fitness centres. "We are encouraging more people to take advantage of the opportunities that their local council operated fitness centres provide for increased participation in fitness activities. Our aim is to provide opportunities for people to become 'more active - more often' in line with Tomorrow's Manukau's goals to create a more fit and active city."

Les Mills classes at the Allan Brewster fitness centre will be just $6 each, or $5 each when bought as a 12-class concession pass. "That's extremely good value for what is a top of the line fitness product," says Mr Dobson. "This everyday pricing has been set separate from fitness centre memberships so that we can provide the widest possible access for the community. Many fitness clubs raise casual prices to drive memberships up, but we are looking to give people as many options as we can to be fit and active.

BODYJAM will be the first class offered, at 6pm next Tuesday, followed by a special one-off 'multi-instructor' BODYCOMBAT class at 7pm.

The timetable has 11 classes each week. In addition to BODYJAM, the line-up includes:

" BODYPUMP - an aerobics workout with weights, and track after track of rhythm and drama to keep participants inspired to work hard for great results. "

BODYBALANCE - a unique blend of ancient disciplines and modern exercise techniques make this a very popular mind and body workout. It draws on elements of yoga and tai chi and gives participants a physical workout while increasing awareness of body, breathing and mind. "

BODYCOMBAT - A real 'kick butt' workout based on martial arts, with a great variety of high energy music. " RPM - something new and exciting for anyone who likes cycling, RPM is a full cycle workout without leaving the aerobics studio. Participants 'travel' along the flat, climb up hills, race each other and then cool down as they 'head for home'. All the way accompanied by a fun soundtrack.

"We think these classes will have great appeal to our community, particularly people who like to add a little 'attitude' and funk into their exercise programme," says Philip Dobson.

The Les Mills classes will be trialled for a six month period. Everyone is welcome to come along and join the fun. Spot prizes will be given away on Tuesday night. The Allan Brewster Recreation Centre is in Tavern Lane, Papatoetoe, phone 278-5319.
