Brothel bylaw dispensations ongoing

MEDIA RELEASE
22 July 2005

Brothel bylaw dispensations ongoing

Auckland City Council has received thirty-six applications for dispensation from the Brothel and Commercial Sex Premises bylaw.

Of these, four applications have been approved, four have been declined and one sign application has also been declined. Twelve applications require additional information to proceed, three have been withdrawn and the remainder are new applications currently being processed.

Judicial review proceedings have been filed against council for a declined application at 574 Manukau Road. The court date has been deferred until later this year.

Brothels operating in Auckland City outside the designated area, must, in general terms, apply for dispensation from the rules of the bylaw if the business is within 250m of a place of worship, a pre-school, intermediate or secondary school, community facilities, residential zone or within 75m of an existing brothel.
