Spectacular Sky Show returns 5 November

One of Wellington’s most popular events, the Pelorus Trust Sky Show, returns to Wellington on Guy Fawkes Night (Saturday 5 November).

“The Sky Show is one of our iconic events – it attracts over 100,000 spectators from around the region and it heralds the start of what’s going to be a fantastic season of events in Wellington this summer,” says Wellington City Council Events Manager John Dawson. “It’s also a safe alternative to the private use of fireworks.”

This year’s Sky Show is particularly special as it is the 10th Wellington Sky Show for award-winning international fireworks maestro Robert McDermott. Robert has designed fireworks displays for events such as the 2000 Sydney Olympics closing display from the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

“We’re really privileged to have someone like Robert to choreograph the show,” says Mr Dawson. “He is the world’s best and because of his expertise we get to see a fireworks show that’s on a par with other international cities.”

The Sky Show starts at 9pm and will run for about 15 minutes to a soundtrack broadcast on 91ZM and Classic Hits radio stations.

The best vantage points to view the fireworks is the waterfront and surrounding hills. Boating spectators looking for a good viewing spot are asked to keep 300m away from the barge, keep their boat speed to a maximum of five knots and ensure they keep sufficient life jackets on board.

Spectators will also need to observe a liquor ban that will apply in the central city from 8pm Saturday 5 November to 6am Sunday 6 November. This means people cannot consume or possess liquor in the central Wellington area except in licensed premises.
