Flooding in Flaxmere
Heavy rain in Hastings District has caused extensive flooding in Flaxmere due to an isolated rain cell which hit the area between 6.30am and 7.30am this morning.
Flaxmere Library, Flaxmere Community Centre and Flaxmere’s Water World swimming complex have all been closed until further notice.
Mike Maguire, Civil Defence Emergency Management Controller for Hastings District, said it was important people kept their movements to a minimum until the situation improved.
“People should stay indoors and keep their travelling to a minimum. Unnecessary vehicle movements through the areas of flooding will only add to the problem. This is a good day to stay home,” said Mr Maguire.
Puketapu School, 5km west of Napier, has also been closed due to flooding. Children and staff have been evacuated to the Puketapu Hotel.
Weather forecasts for the next 24 hours indicate more rain is to come. A situation report will be available at midday.
