Kids Bike Day Proves Popular

Kids Bike Day proves popular

Registrations are already full for North Shore City's popular Kids Bike Day, to be held for a second time this year at the new location of North Harbour Stadium.

The free event is aimed at North Shore children aged 8 to 12, who are keen to get on their bikes and learn some new cycle skills while having some school holiday fun.

Held annually at Onepoto Domain since 2002, the event is moving to Albany this spring to give children in the northern part of the city a chance to attend.

Jade Lucas, North Shore City's transport marketing and consultation advisor, says Kids Bike Day promotes safe cycling in a fun and friendly environment for children.

"We're delighted to repeat the event this year, so we can teach even more children life long cycle safety skills," she says.

TV celebrity Jo Holley will be back as MC for the day, handing out spot prizes and encouraging the participants. One lucky child will also win a brand new bike from Avantiplus Cycles in Wairau.

The fun day includes cycle activity modules and entertainment for all ages, including face painting, a bouncy castle, balloonists, a sausage sizzle, BMX tricks and fresh fruit courtesy of New World Devonport.

Police education officers, volunteers from North Shore City Council and Avantiplus Wairau will help run the event, alongside the Bigfoot Adventures team.

Ms Lucas says all registered participants must be signed in and ready to start by 10.30am.

"Late entrants will not be accepted and we recommend parents arrive at 9.30am.

"Everyone must wear a helmet and we urge caregivers to check that bikes are roadworthy. If unsure, you can have bikes checked for free at Avantiplus Cycles in Wairau prior to the event.

"If your child can no longer attend the event, or is sick on the day, please contact event organisers so other children may have a chance to attend, "she says.
