Witnesses are sought to a late night robbery at the Il Bordello night spot in central Wellington in which a female receptionist was threatened at gunpoint.

Detective Sergeant Mike Patz, Wellington CIB, said the robbery happened at 11.40pm last night and the offender, armed with a sawn off firearm, escaped with a large amount of cash.

He said the man, described as caucasian, in his 30s, slimly built and wearing dark clothing including a beanie, had walked into the Vivian Street nightclub's premises and threatened the female receptionist.

"She was grabbed as she tried to flee. Although she has no physical injuries she was very traumatised by the incident."

Detective Sergeant Patz said the robber fled through the back of the premises and disappeared, possibly in a dark coloured saloon style car that was in the Swan Lane and Marion Street areas about the time of the robbery.

Police have been speaking with people who were in the area last night, including street workers, to see if they can shed further information on the robbery, including descriptions of the gunman and the car.

People who can help are asked to call Wellington Police on 0800 TIPOFF or 381 2000 and ask for the crime car staff.
