Council ensures the future of Ernlea Reserve

Council ensures the future of Ernlea Reserve

Council has purchased a piece of land in Beckenham which will enlarge the current Ernlea Reserve and ensure there is no future development on what has been described as “ South Christchurch’s Mona Vale’’.

The 5164 square metre area of land contains 42 trees estimated to be over 100 years old and is bordered by one of the largest private lakes within the city. It borders the Ernlea Reserve which runs alongside the Heathcote River and is a popular place for walkers.

Councillor Barry Corbett presented a petition of over 1600 signatures to the Spreydon/Heathcote Community Board asking that Council buy the land to ensure its future preservation. The owner had indicated the land may be sold.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to preserve South Christchurch’s answer to Mona Vale,’’ says Mr Corbett. “”We now have protection of a walkway stretching from the river through to the lake making it a fantastic area for people to walk through. The new reserve which is full of trees and flowering shrubs is sheltered from the wind and will be a popular tranquil retreat.

“To have signed the purchase a few days before the Ellerslie International Flowee Show emphasises that Christchurch truly is the Garden City where people value their trees, plants and are united by the need to preserve their historic green spaces.’’

Mayor Bob Parker says the acquisition of the land was an excellent example of Council listening to and working with the community.

“This started with two members of the community, Biddy Pollard and Pat Lindley, who had a passion to preserve a piece of land they knew was an important asset both to the city and to their community. They were joined by a large number of like-minded people and it is through their efforts and hard work that they gathered such a large number of signatures for their petition.

“Councillor Barry Corbett presented an option that gave the best possible solution .for the preservation and retention of the land. It really is a most positive outcome,’’ says Mr Parker.
