Tsunami warning – advice for Wellingtonians
There is a potential tsunami risk to New Zealand from the 8.3 magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of the Samoan Islands at 0648 hours NZDT.
Wellington City Civil Defence Controller Mike Mendonca says while the risk of a tsunami is thought to be low, people in low-lying areas near the coast should stay tuned to radio stations and be prepared to immediately evacuate if warned by authorities.
This advice will apply until further notice.
If told to evacuate they should, where possible, take a radio and cellphone with them, along with items such as glasses, pets and medicines.
