13 Native Trees Vandalised In Town Belt

Dunedin (Wednesday, 24 March 2010) - The DCC’s Community and Recreation Services (CARS) is investigating a serious case of vandalism following the deliberate felling of five mature and eight younger native trees in the Town Belt.

The destroyed trees were discovered by a contractor carrying out routine work in the Prospect Park area of the Town Belt and appear to have been felled using a small hand axe or machete sometime over the past two to three weeks.

CARS staff are appalled at the destruction and have referred the matter to the Police. Letters will be sent to neighbouring residents seeking information on who may have carried out the work or if anyone heard anything whilst this was happening.

Anyone with information about this vandalism should contact Martin Thompson (Parks and Reserves Team Leader) or Scott MacLean (Parks Officer) on 477 4000.
