Dunedin Airport Closed Due to Bomb Scare
A
device that appears to be an improvised explosive device has
been located in a downstairs toilet at Dunedin International
Airport.
It was found at about 9.20am and police were notified shortly after.
It was of sufficient concern to evacuate the airport and close it.
Police and airport officials are awaiting the arrival of army bomb disposal experts from Christchurch. The team is due in around 12 noon today.
Flights in and out of the airport are diverted or cancelled and the air traffic control tower is closed. People should contact Air New Zealand for flight information.
Turbo propeller planes are still flying in to drop passengers off but are leaving empty. No jets are flying.
Around 300 people have been evacuated from the airport including passengers and airport employees.
Police are also stopping vehicles travelling towards the airport at Momona Village and ask that people stay away.
