Volunteering in New Zealand is for all generations
A youth volunteering workshop in Wellington next week will see 20 young people working with representatives from 10 major organisations on how to involve more young people in the organisations’ volunteer programmes. It will be one of two national events held during Volunteer Awareness Week 2010.
The theme for the Week (20 to 26 June), “Volunteering across the Generations”, will highlight the opportunities for volunteering across all age groups, the different forms of volunteering that appeal to particular generational groups and various examples of intergenerational volunteering, including family volunteering.
Executive Director of Volunteering New Zealand Tim Burns said “The purpose of the Week is to highlight examples of volunteering and encourage new volunteers to get involved.”
“It’s about raising people, not money”, he said.
The Youth Volunteering workshop, being held on 22 June, will underline the perspectives of young people and what organisations need to do to involve them in their programmes.
“With input from the 20 young people, who are coming from several parts of New Zealand, the workshop will identify reasons that more young people do not volunteer and what concrete actions the organisations need to take to change this.” said Tim Burns.
The second national event, the release of report of survey of managers of volunteer programmes, will take place at Victoria University on Wednesday 23 June.
“The management of volunteers has been recognised as a most important issue in New Zealand’s volunteering community,” Tim Burns said. “The outcomes of the survey will contribute to a special programme working on the development of volunteer management as a profession.”
Many local events to mark the week are being organised by Volunteer Centres and organisations which involve volunteers in their services and activities. These range across all sectors of the community – the arts, sports, health, education, social services, conservation, emergency services and other sectors.
