Impressive Response To Waipa Community Awards

Locals have got behind their volunteers with 46 groups nominated for the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards.

Nominations for the Awards closed on Friday (11 June). The TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards, which recognise and reward volunteers for the outstanding contribution they make to the local community, are run in conjunction with the Waipa District Council.

TrustPower Community Relations Representative Suzi Luff says she is delighted that so many selfless community groups will be celebrated through this year’s TrustPower Community Awards.

“These outstanding groups are very generous with their time and work hard to make Waipa a better place to live. The volunteers never ask for anything in return; but, it is wonderful that through these awards we can celebrate the fantastic effort being put into this community,” says Miss Luff.

The Awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250. The Supreme Winner will take home $1,500, a trophy, framed certificate and an all-expenses paid trip to the TrustPower National Community Awards.

The 2010 TrustPower National Community Awards are being held in Tauranga and Western Bay of Plenty districts in March 2011.

The Supreme Winner will also win a six month subscription to Fundraising in New Zealand magazine, New Zealand's only monthly publication dedicated to all things fundraising.

Regional Supreme Winners will also be filmed by a TVNZ 6 crew to feature in a new series called ‘Volunteer Power’.

TVNZ 6 has partnered with the TrustPower Community Awards in 2010 to bring remarkable stories of volunteers all over the country. Volunteer Power, presented by Jim Mora and Julia Bloore will tell the stories of visionary and award-winning volunteer projects operating in kiwi communities.

TVNZ 6 is available on Freeview/TiVo channel 6 and on SKY/Telstra channel 16.
The nominations for the TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards are currently being prepared for judging. The TrustPower Waipa District Community Awards will be announced and presented at a function on Monday 19 July, to which all nominated organisations will be invited.
