Architect comments on Queen’s Wharf Sheds
In response to the decision Richard Goldie, a director at Auckland-based architects Peddle Thorp, says we need to be careful not to confuse heritage with character.
“If the site is ‘heritage’, why are we retaining only one shed?
“However, we can be sure there is ‘character’ in the sheds. And when it comes to old structures, reuse ensures we get all that good character, grain and texture for free.
“The reused wharf buildings that line Sydney’s old working waterfront are a case in point. Dave Mitchell is right in saying they’re not remarkable but that they’ve come up really well.
“Keep both the sheds, there’s no hurry, once they’re gone we won’t get them back.”
