The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra’s Tour Of Wellington
August 2010
Tickets on sale Monday 19th July
This winter, the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra embarks on their most epic tour yet – a Tour of Wellington!
Bringing musical heat to the chilled bones of Wellingtonians, the unprecedented tour will see the capital city’s beloved music-comedy ensemble take their bonsai instruments to six corners of the great Wellington region.
Last winter, in an incredible feat, the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra played two sold-out shows on a single night at the Michael Fowler Centre. This year, the orchestra’s exhaustive tour of their hometown will take in theatres and town halls in Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt, Porirua, Paekakariki and Paraparumu, finishing with a standing rock’n’roll gig in Wellington City.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing Wellington,” says orchestra member Andy Morley-Hall, who plans to make the tour even more epic by riding his bicycle to the gigs. “We’re hoping to get some sight-seeing in, and between all the travel, sound-checking and dinner I might catch up with my Mum, too.”
Rumours of the band’s stunning musicality, madcap antics, heavenly harmonies and questionable banter have pervaded the Wellington region since 2005, when they formed in the petite Deluxe café.
“It’s all true,” says Andy. “Especially the questionable banter.”
Having been out on the road for much of the past year, the orchestra is bringing home to Wellington some new and amazing on-stage tricks that are sure to inspire and delight. And for those contemplating which show to attend, Mr Morley-Hall advises “Every show will be different, so come to all of them.”
In the lead-up to the tour, the band will be running their famous Winter Ukulele Workshops for which there are still a few places. See their website for details.
