Electoral Newcomer Offers Shore A Voice
Electoral Newcomer Offers Shore A Voice In Queen Street
22 August 2010
The new face of Auckland politics, Shore Voice, is standing for 21 positions on the new Auckland Council - making it one of the major tickets in the coming elections.
It is also shaping up as a ‘kingmaker’ in the mayoral race.
A blend of council experience and new blood, the team is drawn from across the political spectrum and the North Harbour region.
Shore Voice spokesman and candidate for the North Shore Ward of the Auckland Council, Chris Darby, says the group offers Shore voters a strong, united voice in the Super City era.
“The Shore has unfinished business in Queen Street,” says the two-term North Shore City councillor and Devonport resident.
“Our campaign slogan – your voice north of the bridge – is our pledge to voters that we’ll speak up for their interests and work constructively and collaboratively at the council table and through our local boards.”
Shore Voice is neither running a mayoral candidate nor endorsing anyone chasing the chains, and considers the mayoral race a two-way contest between the Auckland and Manukau incumbents.
“We know John Banks and Len Brown well, and can work with either come October. We want to make the Super City work and ensure the Shore’s interests are protected – from our economy to the environment - and making the most of our transport networks,” Darby says.
“Voting for Shore Voice is the best chance our communities – Shoreites and Coasties alike – have to be relevant again in the Auckland local government scene. Embarrassing sideshows have to part of the Shore’s past; it’s time to look forward to better times ahead.”
Shore Voice will, later this week, release its policy on transport – the Shore’s number one issue.
Meanwhile, people are invited to visit the team’s website www.shorevoice.org.nz to check out its candidate list and other policies.
