Weed out good from bad at free workshops

For immediate release: 13 September 2010

Ever wondered why weeds wander? Or which weed is which? The Bay of Plenty Regional Council is holding weed workshops on 16 – 17 September in Mount Maunganui as part of Conservation Week this year. They are free and open for anyone to register and attend.

The workshop focuses on pest plants of the Bay of Plenty, how to identify them, guiding principles

for weed control, how weeds are spread and options to control them. The workshop includes a PowerPoint presentation, hands-on plant identification, and options for controlling weeds.

Bay of Plenty Regional Council Pest Plant Officer, Sara Brill is running the workshops and said they are suitable for a whole range of people.

“These workshops are really valuable for home gardeners, orchardists, contractors, care group volunteers, and anyone with an interest in protecting our natural environment,” said Ms Brill.

The Department of Conservation and Bay of Plenty Regional Council are working together to promote the workshops as part of Conservation Week this year. The aim is to support and encourage people to eradicate pest plants from their backyard, farm or neighbourhood.

Ranger Community Relations for the Department of Conservation, Pete Huggins said weeds threaten New Zealanders’ native plants and animals, especially when they invade local waterways, wetlands and sand dunes.

“Weeds are also a problem when they start to encroach on productive land. The Department spends time and effort on weed control, because of the risk they pose to our special places.

“I’d encourage people to make time to attend these workshops and get informed about this important environmental issue,” said Mr Huggins.

Weed workshops are just one of the events on offer during Conservation Week. Go to www.conservationweek.org.nz to find out “What’s Happening” around Tauranga.

To register for the weed workshops contact Sara Brill on 0800 368 288 extension 8503, or email sara.brill@envbop.govt.nz
